Daniel Emmett Interview, 2011

Daniel Emmett's great-grandfather, Oliver Cromwell Moore, purchased a farm in present-day Richfield in the 1840s. His grandma inherited 65 acres of that farm, which passed down to Daniel's parents in 1944. Daniel grew up on his parents farm in Akron before moving to Richfield when he was 11 years old. Both he and his father established dairy businesses, which eventually required them to haul their own milk from Richfield to Akron. Daniel and his wife had cows, sheep, and at one point a pick-your-own operation that specialized in turnip greens and green beans. The Emmetts refused to sell their property during the construction of the Coliseum, and still live on the property today.

Constructing, Consuming, and Conserving America: Cuyahoga Valley

Interviews in this series were conducted by public school teachers as part of the Teaching American History (TAH) grant-funded Constructing, Consuming, and Conserving America project, sponsored by the US Department of Education, in collaboration with the Educational Services Center of Cuyahoga County and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The bulk of the interviews focus on the operations and history of the park and region, though several also deal with nurseries in Lake County, Ohio.
